Abstract:
A central feature of the Standard Model is the chiral nature of the electroweak gauge group.  This simple fact, along with the minimal Higgs content for spontaneous symmetry breaking of electroweak symmetry, immediately leads to numerous predictive phenomenological features, including the intra-generational anomaly-free requirements of fermion generations, Higgs low-energy theorems, the GIM mechanism, and more.  Moreover, extensions of the SM matter content, as motivated for example by the baryogenesis puzzle, dark matter problem, or neutrino masses, are immediately confronted with the new physics flavor problem or new little hierarchy problems.  In these lectures, I will discuss the comparative model-building challenges and opportunities of new global and gauged chiral extensions of the Standard Model, including axion and axion-like models using the Peccei-Quinn mechanism as well as Z’ extensions of new chiral U(1)’ gauge symmetries.  I demonstrate that these chiral extensions not only offer new phenomenological signals for a wide variety of experiments but also provide a new framework for understanding the nature of fundamental chirality in quantum field theories.

About the speaker
Dr. Felix Yu is a permanent staff scientist at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. He graduated with a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Harvard University in 2006, and received his Ph.D. in Physics in 2011 from the University of California, Irvine. Before coming to Mainz, Felix was a research associate in the Theoretical Physics Department at Fermilab. His main research interests are collider phenomenology of the Standard Model and beyond, Higgs physics, and dark sector physics.
