FU Shinian, born in Sichuan Province in November of 1956, joined IHEP under  "Hundred Talents Program" in 1999.     He graduated from the Department of Physics, Sichuan Normal University in 1982. He got his Ph.D degree at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) in 1999 and was invited to be a research fellow of CIAE the same year. Now he is full professor, tutor of Ph.D students and member of the Science committee of IHEP and concurrently professor of Peking University.

He is mainly engaged in the study of free electron laser (FEL) and the accelerator driven sub-critical system (ADS). He joined the study of free electron laser, a project of ¡°863 Program¡± undertaken by CIAE. While doing FEL physics, he put forward the phase place model of beam two years earlier than his foreign colleagues and studied the important phenomena of high-power FEL oscillator in transverse and longitudinal directions, such as strong sideband instability and optical guider problems. He was in charge of the physics design of the injector which drives the far infrared FEL, studied the impact of accelerator noise on the beam quality and the FEL oscillator, and built the INEX package for the integrated numerical simulation experiment of the electron linac.

During his study of ADS, he analyzed the beam halo and put forward the method of chaotic theory with which to study the fundamental mode of the unmatched beam halo in the periodic focusing system. He also put forward a new accelerator scheme of simultaneously accelerating positive ions and negative ions. He built the automatic measurement software and the analysis software for the RF system of the resonant coupling RFQ accelerator. They were used in the cold model tuning of the RFQ of INFN with the best results obtained thus far.

He transformed SLAC¡¯s famous EGUN into ion source program. It was installed in the ion source hall of HIMAC accelerator for beam test. And it was also applied in the design of several ion sources built by the National Institute of Radiological Science and Japanese Accelerator Engineering Company.

He succeeded in developing a RF beam chopper for Japanese JHF, which was utilized in an accelerator for the first time in the world. He accomplished the design of MEBY of JHF and put forward a new design method to amplify the beam deflection using quadruples.

His current research field is high intensity proton accelerator for the application in ADS and spallation neutron source.

The key projects he is undertaking include ¡°Study of the Key Physics and Technological Problems of High Intensity Proton Linac¡±, ¡°Study of Intense Beam Physics and Design of Accelerator Structure¡± and ¡°Study of Intermediate Energy and High Intensity Accelerator Physics & Transport of Strong Beam in Low Energy Accelerating Structure¡±, supported by "973 Program", etc.

He has published over 60 papers in foreign and domestic journals since 1984.
